Dyslexia Awareness Week/month 2023
Share
Ever wonder if dyslexia is celebrated for a week or a whole month? You're not alone. In this episode of the Truth About Dyslexia podcast, I shared my plans for October and how I hope to inspire people who learn differently.
In a nutshell, I'm talking about the importance of spreading dyslexia awareness and how we can all be part of the conversation. I also talk about why it doesn't matter whether it's a week or a month, as long as we're learning more about ourselves. This blog post takes you through the highlights.
Why This Month Is Special
Dyslexia can be mysterious. Some find out they have it as kids, others only discover it later in life. This month is a chance to shine a light on the reality of living and learning with dyslexia, so we can support each other.
When I realised it might be “Dyslexia Month” instead of just “Dyslexia Week,” I saw an opportunity. At first, I wasn't sure which one was correct, then I decided it doesn't matter. What's important is keeping the momentum going for all of us to understand dyslexia better.
My Plans for the Month
Everyone has different ways to raise awareness. For me, I'll be sharing more personal stories, helpful strategies, and interviews that open up new perspectives. My aim is to create a place where we can rummage through ideas together.
“Is it dyslexia week or month? Or both? I wanted to share a little on what I am planning for this month. What I hope people get from me.”
This month, I'll talk about:
- What dyslexia feels like day to day
- Tools and tips for reading or remembering information
- How we can support friends who think in different ways
I want to make it simple and clear, so you can take something away even if you're busy.
The Power of Awareness
You might think awareness is just a buzzword, but it helps us be kinder to ourselves. When we know what's happening in our brains, it's easier to tackle challenges. We stop blaming ourselves and start looking for solutions that fit our unique thinking.
Working on a project? Knowing how your mind wanders can help you plan better. Need to memorise details? Being aware of dyslexia lets you find workarounds that suit how you learn. Awareness is the first step to transformation.
How You Can Get Involved
Raising awareness doesn't need a complicated strategy. It starts with curiosity. Here are a few simple ways to get involved:
- Share personal stories with your family or friends
- Ask someone about their experiences with dyslexia
- Recommend resources that helped you see things differently
- Encourage local schools to host short talks on dyslexia
Small steps can ignite the spark for real change. Don't worry about having all the answers—just share what you know.
Moving Forward Together
In the end, it's not just about a week or month. It's about knowing we're not alone in our struggles with words, numbers, or remembering details. We're a community of creative thinkers. We can support each other any time of the year.
As we move forward, I'll keep exploring new strategies and bringing you fresh insights. Think of this month as one big experiment in learning about dyslexia together. It's a safe space to ask questions, share successes, and let go of old doubts.
- We all learn in different ways—there's no shame in that.
- A little awareness opens doors to many possibilities.
- Community and shared stories can reduce isolation.
- Practical tools help us handle life's demands more confidently.
