Emotional Trauma And Dyslexia
Share
Ever find yourself lost in a vivid mental image that feels so real it gives you goosebumps? That’s what living with dyslexia can sometimes be like. In this episode, I dive into how these strong visual experiences can spark intense emotions and share two strategies that help me move through them.
You might think dyslexia revolves around mix-ups in reading and writing. But there's a whole emotional side to it too. This post will outline some personal stories and the techniques I've found that make life much smoother.
Dyslexia Extends Beyond Reading and Writing
One of the biggest misconceptions around dyslexia is that it’s simply about letters and words getting jumbled. Those things matter, but it goes deeper. Our minds often favour the right hemisphere, which means we see, process and imagine in really visual ways.
“Dyslexia is so much more than reading and writing. It’s that we favour the right side of our mind.”
Those vibrant images can be wonderful for creativity, but they can also link up with emotions in a powerful way. This sometimes feels overwhelming because emotional triggers quickly bubble up, reminding us of past events or building fears about the future.
The Power of Vivid Mental Images
In the podcast, I share specific examples of how these mental images can feel so strong they impact my mood for days. It’s like watching a movie that doesn’t switch off. That visual storytelling in your mind can be intense if it’s attached to fear, worry, or even dread.
But I also found a silver lining. The same strong visuals that might cause anxiety can be used for motivation. If we can shift our perspective to more uplifting visuals, we’re less likely to spiral into negative thoughts.
Strategies for Handling Emotional Storms
During the episode, I focus on two strategies that help calm an overwhelmed mind. They’re simple, straightforward and my go-to helpers when the emotional waves come rolling in:
- Mindful Grounding: This is all about bringing yourself back to the present. A quick breathing exercise or a few minutes focusing on something tangible, like a favourite object or a knockout view, can disrupt intense thoughts.
- Emotional Code Work: I’ve worked with practitioners to identify emotional blocks and release them. It’s about acknowledging stored emotions and freeing yourself from their hold. Personally, I work with A G Wellness, but there are many practitioners around the globe.
I find these two approaches flow neatly together. By grounding myself first, I’m better prepared to address deeper emotional blocks and keep those swirling thoughts at bay.
Support and Community
We all benefit from having people around us who get it. That’s why I’m big on sharing resources and safe spaces. Finding a group of friends or an online community, like our Facebook group, can make a tremendous difference when you need to vent or ask a question.

Beyond Logic: The Importance of Emotional Release
Sometimes we think we can just power through things with logic, but accepting dyslexia often means understanding our feelings too. If we ignore emotional challenges, they’ll find a way to resurface down the track. That’s why working on this layer is super important.
Take a moment to notice how you react to intense mental images or stressful situations. Are these patterns you’ve had since childhood? If they are, you might find emotion code work useful. You don’t have to fix it all alone. Professionals can guide you through the process and offer helpful perspectives.
- Recognise that dyslexia can trigger deep emotional responses.
- Use grounding techniques to stay present and calm.
- Reach out to emotion code practitioners for deeper work.
- Lean on community support. You’re not alone in this journey.
