What you will take from this episode

  • I realised I did not need to change the podcast name to talk about ADHD, business or the rest of my life.
  • A lot of the judgement I was worried about came from an imagined audience in my own head.
  • Giving myself permission to make a change quickly took a surprising weight off my shoulders.
  • Truth About Dyslexia is still a place for the good bits, hard bits and messy bits of being an adult dyslexic with ADHD.

The name kept trying to come back

Have you ever changed something because it seemed like the sensible thing to do, then found yourself quietly wanting the old version back? That was me with this podcast.

For a while, I renamed it The Dyslexic Entrepreneur. I wanted room to talk more broadly about ADHD, business, and the various interesting things my brain gets up to. But every time I sat down to record, I wanted to call it Truth About Dyslexia.

A few people also got in touch to say they were sad about the change. They’d listened for years, and the name mattered to them. Oddly enough, it mattered to me too.

So this is why I renamed Truth About Dyslexia back to its original name. It wasn’t really about a logo or a technical update. It was about noticing that I’d created a rule for myself that I didn’t actually need.

If you want to get a feel for the wider conversation, you can explore the adult dyslexia podcast.

I thought a new name would give me permission

My original thinking was simple enough: if the show had a broader name, I could talk about a broader range of things. ADHD. Entrepreneurship. Building a business. The stuff that comes with being an adult dyslexic trying to make things happen in the world.

Then I had the obvious thought: this is my bloody podcast. Why was I acting as if I needed to rename it before I was allowed to talk about the things that matter to me?

That was a useful little coaching moment with myself. The name had become a workaround. Instead of giving myself permission to expand the conversation, I was trying to make the branding give me that permission.

Truth About Dyslexia is still the right home for this. Dyslexia is part of who I am, but it doesn’t sit in a sealed box away from ADHD, work, business, self-doubt, sleep, ideas and everyday life. I want this podcast to reflect that whole picture.

For more of the background around this decision and what was happening behind the scenes, read my earlier update about bringing the podcast back.

The mythical people in my head had opinions

Changing it back brought up another familiar feeling: what will people think? Will they think I made a mistake? Will they judge me for changing my mind?

I know that voice. It can feel like there’s a panel of people somewhere reviewing every decision. But most of the time, for me, those people are mythical. The real pressure is my own self-judgement and comparison wearing a clever disguise.

I’m not saying nobody ever has an opinion. Of course they do. But it’s worth pausing when an imagined reaction is taking up more space than the thing you actually want to do.

When I slowed down, put on some meditative music and gave myself a moment to think, the answer became much clearer. I’m the boss of this podcast. I can make the call. That sounds straightforward, but sometimes our brains need to hear it plainly.

If that inner critic feels familiar, you may also connect with this episode about deep self-talk.

Colourful symbolic path moving away from imagined judgement.

Sometimes the reset needs to happen today

I made the decision in the morning and initially thought I’d wait until my usual Tuesday release to do it properly. Make it official. Give it a neat little launch.

Then I thought, why let this sit in my head for four more days? This is a personal podcast. If I know what I want to do, I can do it today.

It took about half an hour to change the logo, update the name and sort the technical bits. Then I recorded this short episode to explain it. No grand ceremony required.

That won’t be the right approach for every decision, obviously. Some things deserve time, advice and a proper plan. But when the delay is mostly fear dressed up as being organised, acting can be a relief.

For me, the reset was not about getting every detail perfect. It was about removing a small layer of resistance I’d put in my own way.

What you can expect from Truth About Dyslexia

I’m coming back to Truth About Dyslexia because I love sharing my experience as an adult dyslexic with ADHD who runs a business. That includes the good bits, the bad bits and the hard bits.

I’ll keep talking about how my ADHD and dyslexic brain works, what I’m learning, and the stories that might help you see your own experience a bit more clearly. From time to time, I’ll also share what’s happening with Added Sleep, Added Nutrition and the business I’m building.

Building a business can be incredibly fun and incredibly scary when you have dyslexia and/or ADHD. I’m enjoying it, so I want to share it honestly rather than pretending it is separate from the rest of my life.

If you’re trying to understand your own wiring, you don’t have to have all the language for it yet. Start with curiosity. Notice the moments where you’re waiting for approval, making rules that nobody asked for, or carrying a judgement that may only exist in your own head.

If business is part of your picture too, I’ve also put together a practical guide for dyslexic entrepreneurs.

Adult friends sharing ideas and support around a table.

A small bit of permission, from me to you

The point of this episode is not that everyone should rename a podcast or make a snap decision. It’s that I caught myself waiting for permission from people who were not actually there.

Maybe there’s a change you’ve been circling too. It could be a conversation, a project, a new way of working, or simply admitting that something no longer fits. You don’t need to rush it. But it may be worth asking whose permission you believe you need, and whether that person is real.

For me, coming back to this name feels lighter. Truth About Dyslexia gives me room to be honest about the full, sometimes messy picture. And that’s what I want this podcast to keep being.

If this brought up familiar questions about dyslexia in your own life, take one practical next step. Read, listen, talk to someone you trust, or use a short educational tool to put words around what you’re noticing.

Why I renamed Truth About Dyslexia, really

Why I renamed Truth About Dyslexia comes down to one thing: I stopped outsourcing permission for something that was mine to decide. I wanted the name back, I wanted space to talk about my real life, and I didn’t need a complicated reason beyond that.

If you’ve been listening for years, thank you for sticking around. If you’re new here, welcome. I’m glad you found us.

Welcome back to the Truth About Dyslexia. As you'll notice, I've renamed this back from the Dyslexic Entrepreneur, and I just wanted to go over and tell you a little bit about the reasoning behind this. Let's dive into it. Okay, so I have renamed the podcast The Truth About Dyslexia. I mentioned it a little bit on the last podcast. For a period there, I had changed the branding and the name, and I kind of realized that every time I recorded a podcast, I wanted to call it The Truth About Dyslexia.

I just,it's been so hard to change. And I have had a few people reach out a bit sad that I changed it because it was something that they'd listened to for years and years and years, and the name change really impacted them. And I felt the same way, oddly. The original reason for changing it was because I kind of wanted to talk about a broader scope of stuff. You know, I wanted to talk even more about ADHD, about being an entrepreneur. I wanted to talk about all of this interesting, these things, and it kind of dawned on me that this is my bloody podcast.

Why am I saying I have to change the name to allow myself to talk about these things? It seems a bit crazy, right? And it kind of gave me a moment in coaching myself, is that I kind of wanted somebody to give me permission to change some of the topics I talked about, and I kind of felt without a name change, I didn't have that permission. Now, that may sound a bit weird, but it's something I've been learning about myself in other parts of my life around how you kind of want someone to, some mythical person, to kind of give you permission to do something you're uncertain about. You know, maybe you've got something in your life that you really want to do, and you try to put it off, and you're trying to find these workarounds to make your brain do the thing. And for me, my kind of workaround, seemingly, was around trying to change.

The name of the podcast, to let myself have freedom to talk about something different. But in hindsight, the Truth About Dyslexia is who I am. It's what I've been. I don't really care if I have two listeners or 2,000 listeners, but I love sharing my journey as an adult dyslexic, someone with ADHD who runs a business and has all of those fun problems that come with that, all the good bits, the bad bits, the hard bits. And I want to share what works for me and what can help people using different stories in my life. And I got to a point where I said, actually, I give myself permission.

I give myself permission to go back to the Truth About Dyslexia. Even coming back to the name, I had to have, like, a deep, meaningful conversation in my head about allowing myself to change it back, going, Oh, will people think I've made a mistake and I've come back to it? And I was kind of judging myself. You know that voice in your head. It's not like you have a deep conversation, if I'm honest, but it's that worry that people will judge me for this. And it really took me slowing down, putting some meditative music on, and having that moment with myself to remind myself, I'm the boss.

I don't care what other people think. Why am I letting these mythical people judge me that don't exist? And I'm not sure if you're like me, but our heads can sometimes do this to us, right? You can kind of be judged by this mythical, this kind of bullshit artist that exists in our brains that doesn't exist. And it's like, why do we let this happen? And this is not the only place in my life I let it happen.

I kind of realize this from time to time, and I have this moment where I reset myself, and it's fantastic. I feel this weight off my shoulders of this judgment that doesn't actually exist. And it's nine times out of ten, it's just my own self-judgment, my own self-comparison with other people. And, you know, it's kind of like, When you have this idea in your mind where it's so set, it can be hard to shift that. And by just changing back, like I made this call to do that this morning, and I was like, Oh, I'll set it up and I'll be really official. I'll do it on my Tuesday podcast launch where I release one every Tuesday.

And then I was like, Actually, no, I don't want this to sit in my head for four days. I don't want, you know, this is my personal podcast. I'm going to do it today. So it took me half an hour to change the logo and the name and do some technical bits. And then I was like, I'm just going to record a simple podcast which shares my thinking, what I'm about, why I'm going back to it, from there. Like, that's really as simple as it is, guys.

So look forward to me coming back as The Truth About Dyslexia. I'll try and break a few more things about how my ADHD dyslexic brain works. From time to time, I'll share some stuff about added sleep and added nutrition and that whole business that I'm building. Really excites me. I want to share my journey there because I'm enjoying it. It's really fun to build a business, and I think for anyone with dyslexia and/or ADHD, it can be the funnest and scariest thing in the world to build businesses, but it's a no-brainer to get into it.

So, yeah, I just wanted to share that, guys. Have an excellent day. Thank you for all the feedback. Thank you for the messages I get from thetruthaboutdyslexia. com and the emails. Have an epic rest of your day.
